Your acupuncturist will begin your treatment by selecting points along the appropriate meridians and will be cleaned with cotton dipped in alcohol. The needles are then sterilized and put on the selected points. Acupuncture needles come in several lengths and gauges, but they are typically hair-thin, solid, and stainless steel. Some acupuncturists use pre-sterilized, disposable needles.


Usually, needles are inserted just under the skin's surface, but others may be inserted deeper depending on the handled points. Most patients only feel a fleeting feeling as the needle is inserted for the first time. The needles are usually not felt until they are in place.


Many patients report that the procedure is soothing and that they feel better afterward. Patients are often shocked by how relaxed they are during recovery and how quickly the needles are inserted.
